How does it work?
Water Industry Training trainees gain their qualifications through a mix of practical learning and theory based study.
The great thing about our qualifications is that most of the learning happens at your workplace where your trainee gains valuable skills and knowledge during their day to day work. That means they continue to contribute to your business while they're learning.
However, there are some things trainees can't learn through hands on work and that's where the theory based, off job training comes in. This may involve some time off work to attend block courses.
Practical learning
Practical learning takes place on the job, where trainees learn the ropes from the people they work with - employers or supervisors with years of experience in the water industry. Practical work is then assessed by a registered workplace assessor (this can be the trainee's employer in some cases or the training provider).
Theory learning
Theory training happens off the job through specially contracted training providers, or, if a trainees lives in a remote location, by distance learning. All contracted training providers are accredited and registered with NZQA. Theory training is arranged by the trainee's Water Industry Adviser.
Your training adviser
Your training adviser will work with you and your trainee to sort out your training needs. They’ll visit you to track your progress, answer any questions you might have and support you throughout the training.
How does it affect you?
As an employer, you play an important role in giving trainees practical training, showing them how to do the job and providing moral support. You can make a big difference by inspiring them to succeed, especially if you take on the role of a workplace assessor.
And if you have any questions, all you need to do is call your training adviser.
