- Training helped her understand contractors perspectives
- Enjoyed networking at block courses
- Got the practical and theory training she needed
Gabrielle Ranford's modern apprenticeship has helped her understand the perspective of the contractors she works alongside.
The motivated 25 year old has just completed her Modern Apprenticeship in Level 4 Reticulation (Water and Wastewater strands) and the skills and knowledge she learned under the scheme have had beneficial effects on her working relationships with the contractors she deals with.
“My modern apprenticeship has helped me understand where our contractors are coming from,” she says. “I understand their perspective. It’s great to be on the same page.
“I chose a modern apprenticeship because it’s not just straight engineering training. It’s allowed me to be on site and working alongside the guys – doing the hands on work and dealing with clients and consumers.”
Currently working as a drainage network officer, Gabrielle’s day to day work involves helping to manage and maintain the drainage and storm water networks in Timaru.
She says the quarterly goal setting sessions she had with her training adviser, Martyn Simpson, were very useful.
“It’s very helpful catching up with Martyn as you know exactly where you are in your training plan. He gives you support and has the knowledge to tell you if something is a good idea or not.”
If you’re over 21 like Gabrielle is, a modern apprenticeship may still be available for you.
Gabrielle says, “I recommend it for anyone who is interested. You get the hands on practical experience and theory that you need. You go to block courses with like minded people and get to have a laugh about how you deal with issues at work.”
